A Sad Story
Today we drove home. It's really amazing driving the state highways how many abandoned businesses and homes you see. Some of it is easily explainable. For example in Alabama we drove an old state highway that has been replaced by an interstate. It was tons of closed hotels, bingo halls, gas stations, and restaurants that were probably used when people had no choice but to travel that way. In other places, I think it's more related to the urbanization of the US and the small towns that are dying everywhere. In Arkansas, where this photo was taken, they seem to have a particular affinity for flea markets. There are tons of them, both open and abandoned, so we thought this photo was appropriate.
